Hen And Dumplings is a classic Southern dinner for consolation. It can be made using a leftover baked rooster, a purchased turkey, or a rooster. You could also boil a rooster, or rooster breasts to prepare the recipe. My family loves roosters and dumplings. The more dumplings we eat, the more we like them! Dumplings and hens are a popular Southern recipe for a long time. I think of my mom cooking rooster and dumplings as a child and we typically served it on Sundays in the South!
Substances for rooster as well as dumplings.
- Turkey or hen, cooked
- Celery
- Cream of soup made from rooster
- Hen broth
- Water
Dumpling Substances:
- Self-Roasting Flour (you can also create your own right here)
- Shortening
- Water
These ingredients are easy to make dumplings. Today, we’ve always enjoyed the flat dumplings because this is the kind I was raised on. My mother and grandmother each prepared flat dumplings. But, I do think that many of you love the dumplings made of drop, which are extremely simple too. Instead of creating the dough just pinch it off and drop it into the soup mixture.
Great reviews on these delicious dumplings:
“Normally when I make dumplings and rooster, it’s my principal task. This recipe will make a delicious dinner that requires less effort and in only a few minutes. I’m thankful to have this delicious recipe.
“Not frequently do I comment on some recipes, but I’m sharing them here. It was a time when I was always a bit hesitant about making dumplings at home. I’ve either purchased take-out Cracker Barrel or tried to create them with biscuits that would always expand much more than I liked. I came across this recipe several years back, and I’ve made them on several occasions, and they’re great! The other night I needed dumplings, but I could not find this recipe on my list of recipes. I found the recipe from the Martha White website (the identical recipe on the Crisco website) which is known as rooster soup as an alternative to hot water. The claim that they’ve been an abundance is a lie. I put them in the trash without having a go at the recipe. Therefore, I was searching until I found this recipe again. I’ll never ever make another! Identical to Grandma’s.”

- Dumpling Directions
2. Pour 2 cups of self-rising flour into a large bowl, then reduce it to 1/4 cup shortening using the help of a fork or pastry blender and then add 3 cups boiling water, a little at a time until you can roll the mixture into the shape of a ball. Then, roll it out to 1/8 inch thick on a board coated with flour. Cut into strips, then pieces
Remove the lid off the pot, and then add a few squares at once to the simmering broth, changing the lids every 30 seconds, until you’ve added all the dumplings. Once all the dumplings are in, lower the temperature to simmer for approximately 20 minutes. Sprinkle salt, pepper and according to the desired taste.
If you’d like to drop dumplings into the broth, do not roll the dough out but instead pinch off the items to drop into the broth, similar to how you dropped the flat dumplings.
